We’re back with another addition to our Brainiac Passions series, where we dig a little deeper into the secret lives of our Brainiacs to find out where their passions lie outside of the office. This time we grabbed a cup of coffee and caught up with Olga, our resident Scrum Master, to ask her a few questions about her passion for CrossFit.
If you don’t already know, CrossFit is a form of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) that focuses on strength and conditioning workouts made up of functional movements. CrossFit has evolved into a lifestyle and people who train according to the CrossFit ethos are referred to as ‘CrossFitters’ or by their other name, ‘completely insane’. Jokes!
Here is what Olga had to tell us about her fitness lifestyle.
Throughout my life, I have always tried to remain active in some way by either playing sports, training in the gym, doing yoga, or even dancing when I was a kid. A few years ago I joined a new gym where they offered a CrossFit class. I tried it out and immediately enjoyed it, even though I didn’t really have a clue what I was doing. I just really liked the variety of exercises. I haven’t looked back since 🙂
What I enjoy most about CrossFit is probably the diversity of movements and the opportunity to perform certain exercises you otherwise wouldn’t really do in a typical gym workout: weightlifting, gymnastics, high-intensity interval training, etc. I enjoy trying new things and testing myself, and CrossFit is certainly a good way to test yourself, both physically and mentally. When I first started, I couldn’t even perform one strict pull-up, and now after some time training, I can do a lot more than that. It has been great to see how far I have come.
Yes, I have participated in one competition so far. It was a fun but very challenging experience. For me, the best thing about competing is putting in all the time and preparation in training to then see how far you’ve come in achieving your fitness goals.
I really enjoy WODs which require you to train with a partner or in a team – it’s more fun that way. Sure, WODs are important but from my point of view, there is more value in learning new skills to perfect your movements. The better your movements are during any exercise the less likely you are to injure yourself.
Unfortunately, quarantine has forced me (and the rest of the world’s CrossFit community) to stop training for the past couple of months, so the current goal is to get back to a stable training pace. My goal is to quickly get back into the shape I was before lockdown.
No, not really. However, I do look up to my coach and I admire anyone who has taken the leap to become a CrossFitter – it’s no easy feat I promise you!
Find a good coach, dedicate time to learning the proper skills before you lift heavy weights, and take care of your body. It is important to remember to sleep well, eat healthily to speed up the recovery, and add mobility and stretching to your training program.
